It's excellent for anybody with some experience of digital photography but far too long, and with too many caveats, for a beginner. I think they'd find it daunting. If Sophie would like to go to the Amazon Web site presumably Amazon UK and enter "D book", she would see several possibilities listed. I bought the Simon Stafford D book when I got mine and found it useful -- a step or two above the manual which isn't bad as manuals go but not swamping me with decisions. Don McGurrin 12 years ago. Dennis Thomas. I have looked on Amazon and I can only find a Dummies for a Ds which isnt out yet. MJM67 Posted 12 years ago. Edited by MJM67 member 12 years ago. Actually if you read Ken Rockwell page on the D it has some very good information on it--while I don't agree with all of it. He still is a very good source!!!
Which I find give very good skin tone--so before canting stones you might want to look at his page! But read all the information you can and then play with the camera and find what suits your type of photography best!!! Photography is all about learning and the only way to learn it to try. I see these on the UK site and these on the US one. I searched in "books" for the latter, to reduce the amount of irrelevant material.
I wonder why you don't, or didn't. Morgoth-JEV 12 years ago. I got a copy of David Busch's book on Ds. It arrived in the mail today. I thought that it was a 'field guide" kind of book. Turns out it is full size and about pages. Going to start reading it now. Dennis Larson 12 years ago.
The best results are usually based on trial and error. I've found the books to be OK for reference, but very incorrect in situations that are different than in the books. This is digital! It costs nothing to play with trial and error, and while you are at it, enjoy, and learn from the experience. I've seen the Nikon D digital field guide by J. Dennis Thomas and it is really just a Nikon user manual with photos and a few tips and scenarios.
It is still a good book, however, Thom Hogan really helps you bring out the best in that machine. If you are new to photography then I would suggest a book on photography in general.
Marco Waagmeester Posted 12 years ago. Edited by Marco Waagmeester member 12 years ago. There is a great video DVD out there which handles most of all settings and some techniques of the Nikon D and is worth watching! Google for "Jumpstart DVD D" to find it, it's for sale everywhere and i enjoyed learning most features quickly..
A book is more easy as a reference, but the video is pretty clear and the navigation of the menu's is showed step by step although pretty rapid. Ken Rockwell's reviews are nice to read but many things he says i take with a grain of salt, many things are funny but there are also silly things he says. Thom Hogans book is a good complete reference for the D and digital photography in general, it's quiet a heavy read though with all the technical in depth information.
